Even and Odd numbers

Identifying even and odd numbers is an important number sense skill. When we work with whole numbers, it's important to know the difference between even and odd numbers. This knowledge will help you grasp harder math skills like division and prime numbers.

Let's take a closer look at even & odd numbers.

Even: 2, 12, 34, 126, 300

In all these numbers, the ones place has an even number.

Odd: 1, 13, 45, 139, 537

In all these numbers, the ones place has an odd number.

Even Numbers
Even numbers end in 0,2,4,6, or 8 and are divisible by 2. When even numbers are divided by 2, there is no remainder.

0, 2, 4, 6, and 8

These are even numbers.

Odd Numbers
Odd numbers are numbers 1,3,5,7, and 9. Odd numbers cannot be divided evenly.

For example, the number 9 is an odd number. We cannot divide this evenly.

In the example given below, 9 squares cannot be put evenly into two groups. We have 2 groups with 4 squares each, and there is another square that is leftover.

Rules for when you add, subtract, or multiply even and odd numbers:

Adding Even and Odd Numbers even + even = even
8 + 2 = 10
even + odd = odd
8 + 3 = 11
odd + odd = even
7 + 3 = 10
Subtracting Even and Odd Numbers even - even = even
8 - 2 = 6
even - odd = odd
8 - 3 = 5
odd - odd = even
7 - 3 = 4
Multiplying Even and Odd Numbers even x even = even
8 x 2 = 16
even x odd = even
8 x 3 = 24
odd x odd = odd
7 x 3 = 21
