COMPARE NUMBER UP TO BILLIONS
Compare Number up to Billions
To compare two numbers, first count their number of digits.
1. If the numbers have unequal number of digits, then the number with more digits is greater.
2. If the numbers have equal number of digits, then compare the two numbers digit by digit starting from the digit in the highest place value.
For example: Let’s compare 2653 and 2678.
Notice that both the numbers have four digits.
Let’s write these numbers in a place value chart.
Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
2 | 6 | 5 | 3 |
2 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
Notice that, thousands digit in both the numbers is the same. Also, their hundreds digit is the same.
So, we compare the tens digits.
The tens digit in 2653 is 5 and in 2678 is 7.
Now, 5 is smaller than 7.
So, 2653 < 2678
