Conversions of Units of Length

Conversions of customary units of length:
1 foot = 12 inches

1 yard = 36 inches = 3 feet

1 mile = 5280 feet = 1760 yards

 

Conversions of metric units of length:
1 km = 1000 m

1 m  = 100 cm

1 cm = 10 mm

 

Note:

To convert a larger unit of length to a smaller unit of length, multiply.
To convert a smaller unit of length to a larger unit of length, divide.

 

For example: Let's convert 6 yards to feet.

 

In order to convert a larger unit (yard) to a smaller unit (feet), we multiply.

Now, we know:

1 yard = 3 feet

 

Using this, we have:

6 yards = 6 × 1 yard

            = 6 × 3 feet

  = 18 feet

So, 6 yards = 18 feet.
