Math Problems for 3rd graders
Math Problems for 3rd Graders
For 3rd graders, addition and subtraction have already become the foundation for their mathematical skills, and they are moving on up to multiplication and division. Skip counting should have given them the structure for the understanding of these two operations, and understanding that multiplication is just grouping numbers together becomes the base. They should already understand place value and basic operations, including word problems and beginning geometry. Math questions for 3rd graders will take a big step up into more complex skills.
What Math Should a 3rd Grader Know?
Basic Operations
Students in the 3rd grade should place a heavy emphasis on mastering their basic operations.
Addition & Subtraction
Students should be able to correctly solve number sentences up to 3 digits with both addition and subtraction. Learning the properties of addition and subtraction, they will be able to assimilate skills into more difficult math problems. In addition, they will master the use of basic input/output tables in preparation for graphing and algebra.
Multiplication & Division
Students should master their multiplication skills in the 3rd grade. Skip counting can help students gain familiarity with the numbers that will be the answers to their multiplication and division facts.
Relating multiplication and division can be done in a variety of different ways. They can begin with groups of numbers and arrays to set a visual component to multiplication and division. Eventually they will learn to use multiple steps to solve problems with two-digit and three-digit numbers.

Working with number lines and understanding numerical factors can help students to learn fractions. In addition, learning equivalencies so that you can see the relationship between fractions will help 3rd graders to succeed with this concept. Looking at fractions in terms of baking often helps 3rd graders to grasp fractions.
Students will learn about the basics of angles this year, including the different types of angles. They will also learn to differentiate between lines, line segments, and rays. They will study triangles and polygons, learning to identify different types by their angle measurements and the number of sides.
They should also be able to identify lines of symmetry in a given object. This will lead to study of reflection and rotation once lines of symmetry are mastered.
They will also practice calculating the area and perimeter of a variety of polygons and triangles. They will use side length to calculate the both. Beginning with unit squares, they will practice until learning how to calculate more irregular shapes.

Students should be able to correctly identify place values of numbers up to 1,000. Focusing on number patterns, they will learn to manipulate numbers in terms of tens. They will also be able to compare and order up to three-digit numbers.
Word problems will also be introduced as they learn to solve more complex problems. They will learn to estimate the sum, difference, product, and quotient of given problems.

Third graders will learn the basics of probability through visual aids. In addition, they will also learn about mean, median, mode, and range, and practice calculating each.
Third grade math includes telling time, specifically rounding to the nearest hour. They will also continue discussing reasonable temperatures for a variety of items in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. They will also work with basic units of measure for length, weight, and volume.
3rd grade math will include the study the basics of algebra by learning about variables. It is a fun way to begin to strengthen problem solving. They can figure out the basic number puzzles with a letter replacing the missing number in whole numbers and mixed variables.
